In Memoriam:
Christopher Desch, MD,
1955-2006

The cancer community in Richmond and throughout the nation suffered a terrible and unexpected loss with the passing of Christopher Desch, MD, who died December 10, 2006 in a single-engine plane crash. Chris touched countless lives through his engaging interaction with patients, co-workers, and friends. Dr. Desch was an outstanding physician, colleague, friend, husband, and father, known and loved by many in the community.

Dr. Desch was affiliated with the Virginia Cancer Institute (VCI) for the past eight years as a partner of the practice and most recently as our Director of Quality Assurance and Education. Dr. Desch built the Research Department of VCI into one of the most highly successful community oncology research programs in the nation. Despite his national responsibilities with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), Dr. Desch continued to see patients at the outreach program in Kilmarnock, VA which he founded and to which he was extremely dedicated.

Dr. Desch recently joined the National Comprehensive Cancer Network last year as its first National Medical Director and also volunteered countless hours working with the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where he was one of the founders of their Quality Oncology Practice Initiative, as well as working with other organizations to improve cancer care throughout our community and nation. Chris always demonstrated a dedication to his work, the patients he served, and the family he loved.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Desch family at this time. Chris will be truly missed and always remembered.
